In an extraordinary demarche, Washington has asked the Bangladesh Prime Minister to see that the Gramin Bank a novel experiment in micro-financing begun by Nobel laureate Md Yunus to help the poor stand on their own feet, should not be allowed to unravel.
The US feels the experiment with its innovative governance and ownership structure is an effective step toward alleviation of poverty in Bangladesh.
It merits repetition that the Bangladesh government had recently announced its intention to review the institutional framework of the Gramin Bank.
