India is the second largest sugar producing nation in the world after Brazil. Last year in the corresponding period the country’s total sugar production stood at 2.18 crore tonnes. According to Indian Sugar Mills Association(ISMA ), over the last six months there has been an uptick of 28.4 lakh tonnes in sugar production.
Sugar mills in both Maharashtra and UP have logged a significant spike in sugar production. Other states including Karnataka have also had a modest increase in their sugar production.
However, dues to be paid to sugar cane producers have been mounting creating a worrysome situation for sugar mills. Meanwhile, ISMA has called upon the central govt. to come forward to help sugar mills otherwise it would become difficult to run them.
