Sources say duty exemptions on sugar and check on imports as announced in the recent central budget may spark a revival of the single one sugar producing unit in the cooperative sector in Telangana. The lingering crisis of the Nizamabad cooperative sugar factory is being put down to the successive govts’ failure to pay necessary attention to it.
In the 60s when the cooperative was most successful there were thousands of shareholding farmers attached to it. The sugar cooperative could benefit from sugarcane cultivation over thousands of hectares spread across mandals in Telangana. The cooperative had more than a thousand workers and a strong financial background.
