The apex body of cooperatives National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) organized a national seminar on Social Protection and Agriculture-Role of Cooperatives & Food Processing industries on the occasion of World Food Day in collaboration with Food Scientists & Technology, Delhi Chapter in the NCUI Auditorium in Delhi.
The Seminar was attended by Dr Dinesh, CEO, Dr Eram Rao, President, AFST (I), Delhi Chapter, Suresh Srivastava, Secretary General, IFUNA, J.P.Meena, IAS, Additional Secretary, MoFPI, GOI, students of Delhi University and others.
Speaking on the occasion NCUI Chief Executive Dr Dinesh CEO highlighted the current situation of food processing units and challenges and the role of cooperatives. He focused on the younger participants and explained to them the meaning of cooperatives. He also spoke about the potential of cooperatives.
He said India’s cooperative movement is the largest in the world. There are 6 lakh cooperatives and 25 crore people associated with cooperatives in India. He said 50,000 cooperatives are agro – based cooperatives and their main objective is to provide good quality products to farmers at reasonable rates.
Addressing the Participants, J.P.Meena said Cooperatives are doing a wonderful job in making farmers of the country strong. They provide high quality seeds, fertilizers to farmers at reasonable rates.
Cooperatives are generating employment opportunities and government is continuously making efforts to make agriculture sector stronger as it has implemented 42 mega projects to strengthen this sector throughout the country, Meena said.
