NCUI: Shah to kick off International Coop Day event at Vigyan Bhawan

The Ministry of Cooperation (Government of India) and National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) are jointly organizing a grand event to commemorate the 100th International Day of Cooperatives on Monday 4th July 2022 at 11:00 am in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Amit Shah, Union Minister of Home and Cooperation will be the Chief Guest on this occasion. Some of the key dignitaries to grace the occasion comprise B.L. Verma, MoS Cooperation; Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Dairy and Fisheries; Suresh Prabhu, Former Union Minister; Dr. Chandra Pal Singh, President, ICA-AP, Dr. Bijender Singh, Chairman, NAFED, Shri Gyanesh Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation.

The meeting will be presided over by Dileep Sanghani, President of NCUI. National Cooperative Union of India is an apex organization of the cooperative movement with a focus on cooperative education and training.

The theme of the 100th International Cooperative Day is “Cooperatives Build a Better World”. Considering the importance of Atmanirbhar Bharat in creating a better world, the Ministry of Cooperation and NCUI is organizing the event with the theme ‘Cooperatives Build an Atmanirbhar Bharat and Better World.’

The basic concept and vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat are based on the self-sustainable growth of the Indian economy, and the Indian cooperative model of India is aligned with the government’s emphasis on building up Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Across the globe, the cooperatives will be celebrating the 100th International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay) on 2nd July 2022. This marks a decade from the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2012, showcasing the unique contribution of world cooperatives by adhering to a human-centered business model which is inspired by cooperative principles and values.

The aim of the International Day of Cooperatives is to increase awareness of cooperatives and promote the movement’s ideals of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace.

Cooperatives provide jobs to 10% of the employed population, and the 300 largest cooperatives or mutuals generate 2,146 billion USD in turnover. The cooperative movement in India is the largest in the world.

At present, cooperatives in India with a network of over 8.5 lakh covering 90 % of the villages are pivotal institutions for bringing socio-economic development for inclusive growth in both rural and urban areas. AMUL, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, NAFED, etc are some of the well-known success stories of the cooperative movement.

The International Day of Cooperatives has been observed by cooperatives worldwide since 1923. The event is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July. Since 1995, the ICA and the United Nations through the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) have jointly set the theme for the celebration of the day.

The International Cooperative Alliance unites, represents, and serves cooperatives worldwide. Founded in 1895, it represents 1 billion cooperative members on the planet. It is the apex body representing cooperatives estimated to be around 3 million worldwide, providing a global voice and forum for knowledge, expertise, and coordinated action for and about cooperatives. Around 320 organizations from more than 110 countries are members of the International Cooperative Alliance.

The ICA’s members are international and national cooperative organizations from all sectors of the economy, including agriculture, banking, consumer, fisheries, health, housing, insurance, and industry & services. Around 112 organizations from 31 countries are members of the International Cooperative Alliance- Asia and Pacific region.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Chandra Pal Singh Yadav and Aditya Yadav represent India on the board of ICA.
