Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has a written letter to Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani for including Cooperative as a subject in the courses of schools and colleges.

An upbeat Dr Dinesh, Chief executive of NCUI said ”once the HRD Minister writes to UGC, we would take up the matter with them in right earnest.”

Eulogizing the cooperative movement of the country the Agriculture Minister wrote” India’s cooperative movement is the largest movement in the world as there are 10 lakh cooperative societies with 26 crore members.”

“My suggestion is to make cooperatives stronger, engaging the youth in this sector by providing them brief knowledge of cooperatives in colleges and schools. National Cooperative union of India and its arm NCCT should ask colleges and schools to start cooperative related chapter in their syllabuses”, Radha Mohan requested

In India cooperatives reach out to 72 percent of people living in remote rural areas. Cooperatives are playing a very important role as they exist in every sector like Agriculture, Banking, Horticulture, Dairy, Fishery etc, Singh wrote.

Cooperatives are playing an important role in alleviating poverty and in generating employment. After adopting the constitutional amendment in 2011, the govt has made the cooperative sector more democratic and transparent. India is the only country where every citizen has a right to form a cooperative society.
