Delhi government has once again leaned on agri-cooperative NAFED to pull it out on the issue of spiraling onion prices.
The Shiela govt has initiated selling onions in govt-laden trucks at various points in the city. Talking to media NAFED Chairman Bijender Singh said that truck-loads of onion would cover various locations in the city offering onion at the rate of Rs 50 per kg.
Onions are selling at the high rate of Rs 70-80 in the city.
In a bid to boost supplies and control skyrocketing price of onions the govt has also asked Nafed to import onions. The cooperative major is already at work gathering information about the sources of onions.
Sources say the Nafed is likely to import onions from Iran, Pakistan, China and Egypt.
Onions have lately been selling at Rs 70-80 per kg fuelling public anger throughout the country. It is worth a mention that the country exported nearly seven lakh tonnes of onions in April-July this fiscal.
