In a major bid to revamp the cooperative movement in West Bengal , the Mamta government has amended the West Bengal cooperative societies act,2006.
The amendment was long overdue as the cooperative sector in the state had almost grounded to a halt. The state assembly has passed the amended act.
According to the state cooperative minister H A Safwi, the amended act would bring about great changes as it would ensure democratic elections in the cooperative societies and insurance of the cooperative banks.
The new act provided for cooperative service commission and cooperative election commission. The minister hoped that the amended act would usher in a new era of development in the cooperative sector in the state.
