Most of the Indian population is still employed in agriculture and this explains the government of India’s growing worry about the crisis facing it.
The govt has begun mounting efforts to improve agriculture through developing a wide network of marketing facilities. The cooperative organisations are expected to play an important role in accomplishing this goal.
Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar recently informed parliament that the central government would do all in its power to put the farming sector on an even keel and the model APMC Act is a step in this direction.
The model bill provides for marketing and purchase of agricultural products from farmers through the cooperative sector so as to cut out the unscrupulous middlemen.
It bears a special mention that more than a dozen states have already amended their relevant Acts drawing on the model prepared by the central govt. It is only a question of time when other states would follow suit.
