A division bench of the Kolkata High Court has ruled that status quo would be maintained in all Cooperative societies in West Bengal.
The state govt. had filed an appeal impugning the single bench earlier declaring the West Bengal cooperative societies Act 2013 unconstitutional. The appeal would come for next hearing before the division bench early next month.
It is worth recalling that as per the amended Act the tenure of the boards of cooperative societies in the state has been reduced from five to three years.
Besides, the new Act is aimed at weeding out communists from the cooperative sector.
Earlier the Mamta govt, had promulgated an ordinance on this and later got a proper bill passed by the assembly. Scores of the board members of cooperative societies who stood deprived of power challenged the new Act in the High Court.
Pending appeal before the division bench, the present boards will remain unaffected.
