Jakhar demise:IFFCO braces for future

The sudden demise of Surender Jakahar, IFFCO Chairman has left the cooperative sector numbed.  According to Jakhar family sources he was cleaning the gun which went off accidentally killing him on the spot.

Meanwhile, IFFCO  has announced rechristening of its Gurgaon office to  Surender Jakhar tower. An emotional Managing Director Mr U S A wasthi has also announced name of its Paradeep unit to be changed as Surender Jakhar Nagar.

IFFCO condolence board meeting has been called on 20th January. The meeting may also decide on future course of action. According to Iffco by-laws, Vice Chairman will preside over the meeting in the absence of Chairman.

But will Vice-Chairman take over in case of sudden demise of Chairman—is not clear.  It will be a call on Board which has to take final decision. Mr NC Patel is the vice Chairaman who has come into sharp focus after the incident. Mr Patel is said to be a dedicated Gandhian, insulated from glamour and glitter.

IFFCO team led by its Managing Director U S Awasthi has left for Punjab on Tuesday morning where last rites of the departed soul will be completed. Mr Balram Jakhar, the father of deceased is also going from Delhi.

Middle among the  three brothers Surender Jakhar was completely dedicated to farming and farmers. Unlike his two brothers who are in active politics, Surender had dream of connecting the entire world into a global cooperative network.

He travelled tirelessly for last 10 years to achieve this goal. His loss is not only a loss for India but for the entire world. It will take years to see another son from the soil fired with the imagination of making  global cooperative village, a reality.

onday indeed proved unlucky for the cooperative world of India in general and IFFCO in particular when the chairman of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), Surender  Jakhar was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab .

Surender Jakhar, son of high-profile Jat leader and senior Congressman Balram Jakhar, died on the spot after being shot in Punjab’s Abohar city, in Firozpur district. He was on his way to a village when he was attacked.

Balram Jakhar once served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He had also served as a Union minister in the past.

Police have so far not said anything about the motive behind the murder.

Mr. Jakhar was  a graduate from DAV College, Punjab University, Abohar.  He was actively involved with the Cooperatives for about three decades.

Mr. Jakhar, a renowned cooperator, during his long and illustrious career, has made significant contribution aimed at accelerating the agricultural and rural development. A widely travelled person, he carried with him rich and varied experience in the field of agriculture and cooperation.

His zeal in solving and improving the financial position of rural people particularly the farmers and augmenting their incremental incomes through cooperatives remained his goal through out his life. He kept trying to realize his dream of  net-working of cooperatives all over the world to meet their various requirements and needs of people at large for their economic betterment.
