It’s a big day for us; its our day. Come 2nd July and cooperators across the world feel elated. It was in 1992 that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2nd July as the International Day of Cooperatives by a UN resolution.
Cooperators of all hues and of all countries–from Africa to America spend this day in a special way. Reports of celebrations are coming from India where NCUI is holding a proramme to commemorate the day.
African media reports “Government through the Ministry of Industry Trade and Tourism with Cooperatives movement in Malawi will on July 2, 2016, join the rest of the world cooperative movements in cerebrating the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC).”
In a press release ICA says “The International Co-operative Alliance invites cooperators from all around the world to join the international campaign #coopsday. You can visit the website www.coopsday.coop to find useful information and resources to make the best of this day.”
The International Day aims to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors, including governments, at local, national and international levels.
The theme for the year 2016 International Day of Cooperatives is “Co-operatives: The power to Act for a Sustainable Future”. The theme was chosen to emphasize the co-operative contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve three extra ordinary things viz. End extreme poverty, fight inequality, fix climate change – over the next 15 years.
Indian Cooperative joins all in celebrating this Day. Hip hip hurray!
