Silencing critics: Kamal Nath vows to recapitalize co-op banks

Trying to silence not only the opposition BJP but also his own party men, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has decided to recapitalize co-op banks so that the poll-time promise of waiving off loans to farmers could be fulfilled.

In several media reports it has been said that Madhya Pradesh government will soon release the share capital of Rs 2 thousand crore in order to empower cooperatives in the state. The fund will be funnelled through the Cooperative Department to District Cooperative Banks.

This information was shared by Apex Bank Administrator Ashok Singh in a meeting held with the Chief Executive Officers of District Central Cooperative Banks.

It was revealed during the meeting that so far 9 lakh 42 thousand defaulting farmers have been given loan waiver under the loan waiver scheme, said media reports

In the meeting, Singh said that cooperative banks should work within the banking system.

The meeting was attended by Apex Bank Administrator Ashok Singh, Principal Secretary Ajit Kesari, Commissioner Dr. MK Aggarwal, Managing Director Pradeep Nikhara. The loan waiver scheme was also reviewed during this meeting.

The two thousand crore rupees share capital will also be available soon. Principal Secretary Ajit Kesari said that after this now a review will also be done at the district level.

Cooperative banks should ensure that farmers do not face any problem. If there is a problem it should immediately be brought to the notice of the authorities concerned so the problem can be resolved, according to media reports.

Besides the opposition BJP, even his party men have been blaming the Chief Minister Kamal Nath for going back on poll promises. Only last week Jyotirditya Scindia blamed his own govt for its inaction on the waiver of farmers’ loans.

It bears recall that while only Rs 50,000 has been waived off the original promise was to waive off loan upto Rs 2 Lakh. Political leaders are also demanding that the farmers who were affected by the flood should be compensated with money.

In an interview given to a TV channel recently Kamal Nath rebutted charges of going back on his promise of not waiving off loans to farmers and said “It is the biggest fraudulent statement which can be made. It’s on the internet. We are doing it in phases. I always said we will do it in phases.”

“Out of the 38 lakh farmers, 20 lakh farmer loans have been waived. Please get into the portal, their names, their village, their telephone numbers”, Nath added emphatically.
