As part of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, the Pune Urban Cooperative Banks Association organized a state-level conference on “Artificial Intelligence – A Game Changer for Cooperative Banks” at Hotel Sheraton Grand, Pune, on Friday.
Maharashtra’s Cooperation Commissioner and Registrar, Deepak Taware, highlighted the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on cooperative banking. He noted that prior to 2018, cooperative matters were primarily handled at the state level. However, the central government has since extended significant support to the sector, actively promoting the establishment of new urban cooperative banks.
During his address, Deepak Taware stressed the need for social audits of cooperative banks instead of relying solely on financial figures. He emphasized that these banks take calculated risks to support those in need, contributing significantly to social development.
He also underscored the necessity of transitioning to digital banking and integrating AI-driven services to stay competitive globally.
The conference was attended by key dignitaries, including Advocate Subhash Mohite, President of Pune Urban Cooperative Banks Association, Suhas Patvardhan, Chairman of Maharashtra State Housing Society Federation Ltd., and board members Nilesh Dhamdhere, Ramesh Wani, Balkrishna Undare, Mangala Bhojne, and Dr. Priya Mahindre. CEO Chandrakant Shelke was also present.
Advocate Subhash Mohite emphasized the importance of digitization in cooperative banking, noting the declining footfall at physical bank branches. He stressed the need for modernization to sustain urban cooperative banks.
Special honors were given to Hemant Rasane, a newly elected legislator with a strong background in the cooperative sector, and Advocate Hemant Zanjad, the newly elected President of the Pune Bar Association. The conference saw participation from over 350 representatives of cooperative banks across Maharashtra.
Hemant Rasane acknowledged the challenges in the banking sector and reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative movement by establishing a dedicated cooperation ministry. He highlighted that cooperative banking plays a crucial role in financial inclusion.
Suhas Patvardhan addressed concerns regarding AI replacing jobs, assuring that when used efficiently, AI would enhance productivity rather than eliminate employment.
The event was hosted by Prasad Bharde, while Nilesh Dhamdhere delivered the vote of thanks.
