The list of nominations for the Governing Council of the apex body NCUI has been published after the deadline at 5 PM on Thursday. There are 30 candidates who have together filed 54 nominations in total. Some of them have filed more than one set of papers.
One of the major highlights is the entry of Jyotindrabhai Mehta in the race from a multistate constituency on Thursday. Earlier, Campco President had filed nomination but hectic consultations among Sahakar Bharati leaders led to the conclusion that Mehta stands a better chance compared to R Satishchandra.
Being Nafcub President and a high-profile leader, it is being hoped that Mehta would be able to pull off more votes. This constituency has the highest number of voters. Each top leader from Chandra Pal to Bijender to Amin to Sivdasan Nair and others have 2-3 votes each in this category.
There is general support for Pramod Singh of Uttarakhand among these leaders but how far these votes will add up for him is anybody’s guess. Sahakar Bharati has also a sizable vote share in this category but not enough to win, say sources. There would be a serious tug of war, said several co-operators.
There are also some co-operators who believe that given Mehta’s stature he should contest only if he is sure of victory. But there are others who believe its no big deal to lose in democracy.
Coming to nominations filed, it clearly reveals those who have no challengers and those are bracing themselves now for the voting. Those against whom no candidate stands include G H Amin, H K Patil, Sunil Kumar Singh, K Sivasadan Nair, Bijender Singh (state co-op banks) and V P Singh. These names have been cleared in the Thursday list.
The fight has now been restricted to four seats- Multistate, Housing, Labour, Bihar-WB and Sikkim unions, among others.
Earlier, we had told that six candidates have won and await formal announcement by the RO. They are Dr Chandra Pal Singh, Dileep Sanghani, Bijender Singh, Mangal Jeet Rai, Koliakode Krishnan from Kerala State Co-op Union and Pradeep Kumar from Uttarakhand.
There are 133 voters. After scrutiny and withdrawal the final list of eligible candidates will be known by Nov 21.
