NAFED: Nomination begins; not a smooth ride for many old-timers

The elections of the board of directors of agri cooperative-Nafed is going to be fraught with uncertainties with several old timers finding it difficult to get re-elected.  The nomination for the elections of the BoD begins from today and will continue till 13th May 2024. The BoD election is slated for 21st May, 2024.

The final list of delegates who are eligible to participate in the elections of the board of directors of agri cooperative-Nafed was made public on Monday. 582 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the election slated for 21st May 2024.

Those seeking re-election and finding it tough include Dr Chandra Pal Singh, Bijender Singh, Mangi lal Danga, Sunil Singh and many others.

For many years NCUI President Dileep Sanghani has been representing Gujarat State Cooperative Marketing Federation on the board of Nafed but this time Gujarat Deputy Speaker Jethabhai Bharwad is representing Gujarat State Co-op Marketing Federation as a delegate. There is speculation that he will make it to the board of Nafed.

Uttar Pradesh Cooperation Minister JPS Rathore representing UP State Warehousing Corporation, is also in the list raising eyebrows of many. Rathore may create problems for Chandra Pal, sources aver.

Similarly, Bijender Singh has two challengers from North-Eastern States including Sikkim and Apex level Marketing Societies of the Union Territories— Anant Rao from Anadman & Nicobar Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation and M Chuba Ao from Nagaland State Cooperative Marketing Consumer Federation. But the sources say that Bijender is rather safe with two of his rivals vowing to support him only.

Besides, seven directors are to be elected from the constituencies reserved for cooperative societies at the district level. These constituencies are divided into- Western, Northern, Eastern, Southern and Central zones. Eastern zone is a large constituency comprising 13 states. In this constituency, there are 556 delegates who are eligible to cast their votes. Sunil Singh, Biscomaun Chairman is contesting from eastern zone constituency.

A representative is to be elected by the members admitted under Bye-law 4(a)(iii). As per the list 13 delegates are finalized and from this constituency, Nafed’s outgoing Director and Kribhco Chairman Chandra Pal Sing Yadav and UP Cooperation Minister JPS Rathore are in the list, among others.

According to the final list, the Nafed board consists of 21 directors out of which 10 are to be elected from State Cooperative Marketing Federations and in this category only 10 delegates are finalized. It is conjectured that 10 directors may be elected unopposed.

The other two directors will be nominated from NCCF and the Government of India.

However, the full picture would emerge on 15th May 2024 at 5:00 P.M, the day for the publication of the final list of contesting candidates.

Candidates can file their nomination papers between 7th May to 13th May 2024. The polling will be held on 21st May 2024 at the NCUI Auditorium and counting of votes and declaration of results would be announced on the same day.

The meeting of the newly elected Board of Directors of NAFED will begin at 10.00 am on 22th May 2024 to elect the Officer-bearers at the NCUI’s meeting hall.
