Handcuffed Jagneshwar’s remand extended

The Odisha State Cooperative Bank’s former Chairman Jagneshwar is once again in the news. The act of police handcuffing him has sparked controversy.

The police was taking him from a jail to the vigilance court. Earlier he had been arrested on charges of giving a huge loan to a sugar mill while he was president of the Odisha State Cooperative Bank. The sanction of the loan was in utter violation of the guidelines.

The Patnaik govt is getting a lot of flak because Mr Jagneshwar has been handcuffed.

Jagneshwar’s lawyer has said the use of handcuff is violation of the apex court’s guidelines and human rights. According to the lawyer, police can put handcuff only on hardened criminals.

The OJM leaders have criticised the state govt for its vindictive and undemocratic behaviour towards Jagneshwar. The whole thing is being done on the express instruction of chief minister Navin Patnaik, they have charged.

Meanwhile, the court has ruled that the accused would remain in police custody for another fourteen days.
