Farmers’ cooperatives oppose Modi’s auto hub

Gujarat farmers including farmers’ cooperatives association and milk producing farmers have taken the bull by the horns and openly vented their opposition to their land being taken over for industrialization as planned through Special Investment Region (SIR) in the state.

A source with direct knowledge of the development is reported saying it revives memories of what had happened in the left governed West Bengal.

Political analysts see this as a bad omen especially for Chief Minister Narendra Modi who has just got anointed chairman of BJP’s election campaign committee at the national level. Some people go so far as to say that this may even trigger a bigger people’s movement against the Modi style of rapid capitalist development in Gujarat.

A large number of farmers are already mobilised under the banner of Jamin Adhikar Andolan opposing the proposed Viramgam Becharji special investment region project in the state. It is worth mentioning that the Modi govt intends developing this area as an auto manufacturing hub.
