Chhattisgarh follows Kerala, attempts merger of DCCBs

There is no letter, no word and no murmur of protest. Sahakar Bharati which accused the Left-led govt of Kerala of engineering merger of state DCCBs and ruining rural credit system, is silent when one of its “own”- Raman Singh govt does the same by acquiring RBI’s permission of amalgamating DCCBs in Chhattisgarh.

Reserve Bank of India has recently given approval for merging six DCCBs with Chhattisgarh State Cooperative Bank- the apex banking entity in the state. It is a confirmed news, claims Chairman of the State Cooperative Bank Ashok Bajaj.

Earlier, the state government had sent a proposal to RBI for merging six DCCBs with Chhattisgarh State Cooperative Bank. The names of six DCCBs are Raipur, Durg, Rajnandoan, Jagdalpur, Ambikapur, Bilaspur District Central Cooperative Bank.

Talking to this correspondent Ashok Bajaj said, “Yes, RBI has given approval for merging six DCCBs with the apex bank and the process of merger has started. The assets and liabilities of these banks will be handed over to the apex bank”.

Ashok Dabas, who has been heading BJP’s cooperative cell in the past, however opposed the idea of merging DCCBs by the Raman Singh govt. He told this correspondent that the door of judiciary is yet not closed, hinting at knocking the court when his own govt has failed him.

Sahakar Bharati officials have, however, yet to react to this development. It bears recall that they were leading opposition from the front on the issue of merger of Kerala DCCBs.

Here again as in the case of Kerala, these six banks are in profit and performing well in their respective districts. About three thousand employees are working in these DCCBs.

More than four lakh farmers are their members. These banks have more than 250 branches across the state”, informed Bajaj who is also the Vice-Chairman of the apex body.

The Election Commission of India has announced dates for the assembly election in Chhattisgarh. The polling will take place in two phases i.e, on 12 November and 20 November for 90 seats. The election code of conduct is enforced and therefore the process of merging is likely to be completed only after the election, quipped a cooperator.

Recently, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh inaugurated the newly constructed building of the apex bank in Atal Nagar. State Legislative Assembly speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal, Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal Cooperative Minister Dayaldas Baghel and many others were present on the occasion.
