In a rather rare gesture, Rome headquartered World Farmers Organization invited Dr Nandini Azad, President of ICNW to its General Assembly held recently in a hybrid mode. Dr Azad participated in the event through virtual mode due to the pandemic.
The President of World Farmers Organization (WFO), Mr Theo De Jager welcomed Nandini Azad and her organization Indian Cooperative Network for Women to the General Assembly into their fold. WFO is rated as one of the most powerful global platforms of farmers across the world.
Congratulating President Mr Jager and WFO, Dr Azad said the General Assembly was a great success. She added that WFO works “real” with farmers. She informed the Assembly that the farmers are the backbone of Indian economy too.
Azad also took the opportunity to congratulate the Secretary General, Policy Head and team of WFO for their hard work and for organizing “gender equal team”.
On the occasion, Dr Azad presented to the WFO General Assembly a pioneering report on Gender equality in Family farming on the ICNW experience in 2019 inaugurated by the President of Luxembourg.
Earlier last week Dr Nandini Azad participated in their Asian constituency meetings, in which she highlighted that ICNW had reached 1.5 million poor women through Cooperatives and was a leader in the sector, marching towards half a century.
ICNW was also invited to attend the Action Track 5 & AUDA-NEPAD Food Systems Dialogue on Local Production for Local Consumption for Africa on behalf of WFO on 29th June 2021, claimed a press release.
The meeting was to enable national and regional CAADP (Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme) and Nutrition focal point persons to exchange on AT5’s emerging key issues in building food systems resilience.
It had the participation of national, Regional and International organizations working towards the UN Food Summit later this year.
The press release also says that ICNW’s International Cooperative week will culminate with a media campaign of women farmers advocates for the WFO ‘farmers advocates’ worldwide campaign starting on the 2nd Death Anniversary of Legendary Co-operator, Founder and Padmashri Dr Jaya Arunachalam from 29th June 2021.
