Leading from the front, senior Sahakar Bharati leader and a Director on the central board of apex bank RBI, Satish Marathe spent weekend meeting Chairmen, CEOs and ordinary cooperators connected with the urban cooperative banking and cooperative credit societies.
The north eastern region of India has 14 urban cooperative banks and hundreds of cooperative societies and there was a need to encourage them to carry forward the cooperative movement with knowledge and confidence, said Marathe to Indian Cooperative.
“With an objective to sensitize Board of Directors as well as CEOs of those Urban Cooperative banks, we had kept a training Program on 27th July 2019 at the Institute of Cooperative Management at Guwahati”, he added.
The program was jointly organized by Assam Chapter of Sahakar Bharti and Assam State Federation of Urban Cooperative Banks & Credit Societies.
Directors and CEOs of more than eleven urban cooperative banks participated in the training program. Local cooperators say very few cooperative programs which were held in the past in the north east were as big as this gathering of urban cooperative banks.
Training sessions were conducted by the likes of Satish Marathe, Dr. K Ramesh, Director of IIBM and Dr. K I Meetie, Director of ICM, among others.
Marathe spoke elaborately on the role of urban cooperative banks and the present outlook for the sector by the regulator. He also stressed upon the role of the umbrella organization and the role of the Federation in promoting the cooperative movement in the north east.
Dr. K Ramesh spoke about various challenges facing urban cooperative banks and explained the recent guidelines on the Board of Management and Dr Meetie spoke about the effectiveness of having professionals in the management of urban banks.
Towards the end, Satish Marathe encouraged all the Directors and CEOs of urban cooperative banks to work together and spread the positive news of the cooperative sector across all sections of society.
It bears recall that Sahakar Bharati is making efforts to revive the cooperative movement in North-Eastern states which are supposed to be weak. Its leaders keep traveling through the areas taking stock of the situation of cooperatives. Only recently, its Organizing Secretary Sanjay Pachpor visited Manipur where a day’s workshop was planned by the local unit of the Organization.
