In a significant move towards ensuring the availability of branded grains to the citizens, Union Minister Piyush Goyal launched the sale of Rice under the ‘Bharat’ brand, accompanied by the flagging off of 100 mobile vans from India Gate in Delhi. The event witnessed the presence of numerous leaders from the cooperative sector, emphasizing the collaborative effort towards this endeavor.
NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) and NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India) played a pivotal role in supporting government initiatives aimed at providing consumers with access to branded grains. Addressing the gathering, Minister Goyal highlighted that the introduction of retail sale of ‘Bharat’ Rice would enhance market supplies at reasonable rates, contributing to the sustained moderation of prices for this essential food item.
‘Bharat’ Rice will be made available through various outlets including Kendriya Bhandar, NAFED, and NCCF, in 5 Kg and 10 Kg family-friendly packaging, priced at a maximum retail price of Rs. 29/kg. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s commitment to both farmer welfare and consumer satisfaction.
Under the overarching framework of PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana), various segments of the population, including farmers, over 80 crore beneficiaries under the Targeted Public Distribution System, and marginalized groups such as school children and adolescents, are receiving substantial benefits.
In tandem with measures to stabilize prices, the Government of India has increased the allocation of wheat under OMSS (Open Market Sales Scheme) and imposed restrictions on wheat stock holding to prevent hoarding. Additionally, export of wheat has been prohibited to maintain domestic availability.
Minister Goyal emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of sugarcane farmers, citing substantial payments made towards cane dues. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Price Stabilization Fund and procurement of tomatoes at subsidized rates underscore the government’s dedication to mitigating consumer hardships.
