Gujarat State Cooperative Union, Ahmedabad recently organized a Webinar on the theme of Election Procedure in Primary Cooperative Societies. The webinar was presided over by Ghanshyambhai Amin, Chairman of Gujarat State Cooperative Union.
Inaugurating the webinar, Ghanshyambhai Amin, said the cooperative activities are run and managed by the people and for the people in the true spirit of democracy. The International Cooperative Alliance has accepted the principle of Democratic Control of Members that is of paramount importance. In cooperative societies members are democratically elected and societies run and manage the affairs and administration of the society, Amin underlined.
In accordance with Section 74 of the Gujarat Cooperative Act, a provision for the election of the Managing Committee of the society has been made in from (K ) to ( V ) of the Section- 145 and the rules for conducting the election are also laid down therein, he stated.
Amin said “The elections are required to be conducted in accordance with the approved by-laws. But looking at the Corona Pandemic, it is not practically possible to conduct the election but not conducting the election violates the provision of the Cooperative Act.”
“On the other hand, conducting the election violates the guidelines of Covid – 19. Taking this into consideration, a representation was made to Ishwarsinh Patel, Minister of Cooperation of Gujarat State and other officers of the Cooperation Department”, Amin felt.
Amin informed that “Promptly acting on our representation, the govt. issued a notification on 13th May 2021 and thereby extended the date for holding the election up to 15th June 2021. The Government deserves compliments and appreciation for taking a fast decision for extending the date of election.
JJ Shah, the retired Joint Registrar of the Cooperative Societies offered detailed guidance on the voting rights, nomination filing procedures, the power of the Election Officer, the notification issued by the Government etc. in respect of the election procedures for the cooperative societies.
