R.S.Sodhi MD of Amul has advocated for a new deal for dairies in cooperative sector and cattle farmers for a healthy India. He said this in relation to the upcoming budget.
Sodhi’s tweet has found huge support in social media where people are urging Nirmala Sitharaman to address the problem in the coming budget.
In one of his tweets Sodhi said the government should lay down new policies to ease the dairy sector’s continuing crisis. He has retweeted tweets of those who have expressed their agreement with his views.
Sodhi also enclosed a newspaper contribution quoting a farmer leader saying the government should bring in policies that could spur the dairy sector to faster growth and help milk cooperatives overcome their present difficulties.
Nearly 2 crore people belonging to organized and informal sectors get their jobs in the dairy industry. That is to say, 60 crore people are dependent on the milk sector for their livelihood.
A continuous fall in prices of milk could push a large number of milk producers out of the dairy sector and thus compound the crisis that already exists in the rural economy.
Experts say there is a need to provide farmers with remunerative prices for their produce and the government should ensure adequate budgetary provisions for the dairy sector if the country wants to meet its growing need for milk and achieve self-sufficiency in milk production.
