Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Chairman Vipul Choudhary takes the view that the central govt should give up its control over Mother Dairy and allow it to be managed by cooperatives.
At a time when the govt is taking out money from various public enterprises it would only be logical if it seriously reconsidered its involvement in the milk business. Mr. Choudhary was talking to reporters in the capital the other day.
The mother dairy is a govt. outfit that sells milk in Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Saurashtra. It is managed by National Dairy Development Board.
According to Mr. Choudhary, at the time the mother dairy was established there was a need for such an organisation. But it is no longer relevant as things have vastly changed over the last years. It is time the company was handed over to a cooperative like Amul, he opined.
Mr. Choudhary said as the mother dairy has paid all its loans to the NDDB through profits made from dairy cooperatives in and around Delhi and GCMMF, it is no longer subject to control of the Nddb and free to go the way it deems fit.
The mother dairy is a major supplier of milk to various cities including the nation’s capital.
