The western region of Maharashtra with a dense network of cooperatives controlled by Congress and NCP has refused to support these two parties in the recent parliamentary polls and instead voted for the BJP.
This is being seen as a change of the guard in the cooperative politics of the state.
Congress and NCP had traditionally dominated the cooperative sugar factories and cooperative banks in the region and derived their power from them.
Commentators say the election outcome shows people were fed up with the gross mismanagement of the cooperatives the two Congresses were able to indulge in with impunity.
