I am avide reader of the Q and A and it is very heartening to receive your advice on various issues. In our Society in Pune the Managing Committee comprising of 11 members have laid down some basic rules such as Vehicles must carry the Society stickers, timings for commercial vehicles to gain access to the Society etc. The Committee members take turns depending on their convenience to monitor various activities. In recent times we have put on a restriction on washing of vehicles with water on a daily basis because of acute water shortage in our area. A resident has taken an objection to the fact that members can not do such policing under the law, whereas our contention is that we are merely ensuring compliance with the rules laid down. Are we doing something against the law ? Grateful for your advice.

Better ask those who knows law better and are aware “that members can not do such policing under the law” as to which Section of which law says that you can not do this. Unless a law prohibits prescribing penalties for a breach thereof there is nothing that you can not do. So do not worry. If they point out the law let me know to advise you how to overcome.
