I am a member of a society located in Mumbai Maharashtra and would like my wife to be an associate member to enable her to attend society meetings in case I cannot do so.
However I have been told that I cannot do so unless I make her a jointmember.is that true or can I make her an Associate member without the need to make her a joint member.

It appears the Secretary is going by Model Bye laws 2014, which defines Associate Member as a person who is a joint owner (member) of the flat. You are absolutely right that in 2014 Model on page 77 there is a statement which contradicts what the Secretary told you. But a decisive fact is what registered bye laws of your CHS provides as that is the law for you and your Secretary. If your CHS has adopted Model Bye laws 2014 then what he says is partly right. A statement on Page 77 represents inefficiency in Registrar’s office in preparing the Model bye laws. If your Registered bye laws provides the procedure as to how you can make any person your Associate member Secretary is bound to follow and Not Model 2014.
Buy a copy of your Society’s Bye Laws from the Secretary at Rs 100 approx. You will be able to make your wife an Associate Member for sure.
