West Bengal: ED searches co-op banks

The rupee fell below the key psychological level of 55 to hit a new record low on Monday, setting up the prospect of further falls unless the central bank takes measures or intervenes more aggressively, traders said. ED officials are conducting searches on cooperative banks across West Bengal checking if lump-sum amounts were transacted after demonetization, say media reports.

The searches are being carried out in Hoogly, Howrah and Nadia districts of the state.

The RBI had on November 14, stopped old notes’ deposits and exchange in the cooperative banks. The order is still applicable, a source said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister has objected to the Centre’s move to deploy CRPF personnel for providing security to Income Tax officials during search operations in the state.
