According to media reports the Tamil Nadu govt will not reduce the five-year term of directors of cooperative societies in the state. It is informed that the state law department will withdraw the bill passed by the assembly in January this year to amend the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies Act of 1983. The bill seeks to reduce the five-year tenure to three years.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu State Co-operative Societies Election Commission has asked the registrars of the cooperative department to begin preparations for conducting elections for 4,684 societies whose tenure will end by April next year.
Tamil Nadu has 26,754 registered cooperative societies under 15 departments with 2.4 lakh members. Nearly 21,000 societies are functioning well.
