Three sugar co-ops on anvil in Telangana

Pocharam Srinivas ReddyThe Indian Express has carried a report on the Telangana state govt planning to get three sugar factories at Medak, Metpalli and Bodhan managed by farmers on cooperative lines. The govt will take all necessary steps to reorganize the factories including settling their financial liabilities if any.

According to the state agriculture minister Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy said Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao has given the plan the thumbs up.

The report says the Telangana farmers harvest just 30 tonnes of sugarcane per hectare whereas farmers in Maharashtra produce more than 100 tonnes. Sugar cooperative factories in Maharashtra crush annually 10 lakh tonnes as opposed to a mere 1 lakh in Telangana.
