Several sugar millers’ organizations including the Maharashtra federation of cooperative sugar millers have long been demanding a hike in MSP of sugar, reports a news outlet.
They argue this will enable them to overcome their financial crisis.
Sources say sugar millers in the country are supposed to pay farmers over Rs 20,000 crore in arrears.
This season, the sugar production of the country has surpassed Brazil’s sugar production and India has become the world’s largest producer of sugar with a record production of 325-330 lakh tonne against the consumption of 260 lakh tonne.
