Union Minister of Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated 5th Maize Summit 2018 at FICCI, New Delhi on Saturday and said maize production is expected to cross 27 MT in 2017-18 underlining a massive growth.

Maize production in India has seen a boom in recent years due to increase in area as well as productivity, said Singh. In India, Maize is the third most important foodgrain after wheat and rice.

The four states, namely Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan account for more than half of the total maize production. Currently, India is among the top five exporters of Maize worldwide.

Congratulating FICCI and PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) for coming up with a Knowledge Report on Maize Vision 2022, the Minister expressed happiness over the two bodies thinking on the lines of achieving the Government’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.
