Assam State Cooperative Bank Former Chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Vice-Chairman Biswajit Phukan have won the Assam legislative assembly elections by a huge margin. Both fought the election from Bharatiya Janata Party.
Readers would recall that after the EC announced the date for assembly election of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma had made Phukan as the officiating chairman of Assam State Cooperative Bank. But after Phukan was also given a ticket for fighting the assembly election, he made Kartik Das as the officiating Chairman of the bank.
Sarma and Phukan won the election from Jalukbari and Sarupathar constituency respectively. Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s key strategist in the northeast, defeated his nearest rival, Congress’ Romen Chandra Borthakur, by a huge margin. BJP candidate Biswajit Phukan looks headed for a victory over INC’s Roselina Tirkey in Sarupathar.
“It would be my privilege to represent the constituency for a fifth consecutive term. My gratitude to the people of Jalukbari, PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda,” Himanta Biswa Sarma twitted.
