The farmers’ income could be doubled only when the milk production rises to 300 MMT by 2019-20, said the Secretary Devendra Chaudhary of Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries. He said this while on a visit to the facilities ICAR-NDRI and NBAGR, Karnal (Haryana) where he also interacted with the scientists.
He participated in an interactive discussion on “National Bovine Genomic Centre for Indigenous Breeds” and National Action Plan on bovine breeding. The Secretary stressed the scientists to work towards enhancement of productivity in indigenous breeds of cattle, as more than 80% of indigenous animals are with small & marginal farmers and landless labours yielding 3kgs of milk per day.
He mentioned that in order to double farmers’ income there is a need to increase milk production to 300 MMT by 2019-20. The Secretary, DADF also visited Central Herd Registration Scheme milk recording Centre at Gannaur of Sonipat District and emphasized the need for field performance recording and to evolve sustainable method for milk recording.
