The Punjab Cabinet recently said yes to some amendments to the Punjab State Cooperative Societies Act 1961 in order to discourage cooperative bodies’ involvement in unnecessary legal actions, reports UNI.
Official sources say the amendments are likely to promote efficiency and transparency in the functioning of cooperative societies. The cabinet meeting was presided over by chief minister captain Amarinder Singh.
Section 13 of the Act providing for cooperative Societies and allowing the concerned societies and their creditors to object to the proposed order of amalgamation of more than one society by the Registrar will be amended.
In future, cooperative societies and their creditors will get another opportunity of approaching the government against the orders of the Registrar.
Section 19 (2), of the Act will be amended to enable the Cooperative Society to nominate a member who is eligible to vote in another Cooperative Society, of which it is a member. At present, the situation is different.
Section 26 (I-D) and 27, dealing with Administrator’s appointment will be amended providing that the period of delay due to orders of the Judicial Courts shall not be counted at the time of computing the tenure of such Administrator.
