A secretary of cooperative society in a Bathinda village has been booked for allegedly embezzling Rs 1.40 crore of 66 farmers, according to a report in Times of India.
The farmers had prepared credit limits with the cooperative society in Dhipali village where the society secretary Arvinder Kumar had usurped the money by showing advances made to society members.
Cooperative department officials claimed that Arvinder had been misusing farmers’ money for the last four years.
Police say the society secretary had prepared credit limits of 66 members and withdrew the money to the tune of Rs 1.40 crore but did not pass it on to the members. He put the money in the accounts of his relatives. A case under criminal breach of trust has been registered at Rampura Phool police station against Arvinder and efforts are being made to arrest him, police added.
