A 52-year-old man from Maruthathoor, Thiruvananthapuram, died in the hospital after consuming poison on April 19 due to a cooperative bank’s alleged refusal to return his Rs five lakh deposit.
The man, Somasagaram, had been seeking the money for his daughter’s marriage expenses and was distressed by the bank’s repeated denials.
His father mentioned that despite pleading for six months, the bank not only declined but also resorted to threats, pushing him to the extreme step.
The bank cited financial difficulties, claiming delays in loan recoveries hampered deposit returns, promising to refund by June 30 after the tragedy.
