The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment upheld the Haryana government’s decision to bar certain categories of citizens from contesting local elections. The judgment delivered by a two-judge bench maintained the constitutionality of the Haryana Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 2015, reports Live Mint.
The Amendment Act, among others, listed persons who fail to pay arrears, if any, owed by them to either a Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society or District Central Cooperative Bank or District Primary Agricultural Rural Development Bank.
Sources say the listing of those defaulting on loans to cooperative societies and banks among disqualified categories of citizens will greatly help cooperative institutions recover their dues from defaulters as well as strengthen their financial situation.
