The government attempt to amend Section 78A of the Co-op Act is meeting stiff opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.
The amendment empowers the registrar in cases of financial irregularities to appoint a committee comprising three or more members of the society, or an administrator, or a committee of administrators, to manage the affairs of the society for six months.
According to Indian Express reports, the Maharashtra government’s decision to amend the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, 1960 has angered the opposition in the state.
The opposition thinks that the amended Act will allow the govt. to exercise control even over cooperative societies that have not availed state loans, shareholding or financial help.
