Odisha govt has decided to empower District Collectors to perform as Additional Registrar, Cooperative Societies in their respective districts to supervise all grassroots cooperatives like PACS, LAMPCS, SCS, FSCS and RCMS, say media reports.
The power is being given under the provisions of Odisha Co-Operative Societies Act, 1962 and Odisha Cooperative Societies Rules 1965.
Sources say, the move is aimed at enhancing cooperatives’ efficiency as they play a major role in the disbursement of crop loans to farmers.
A source familiar with the state’s cooperative sector said, cooperatives were mismanaged and their performance left a lot to be desired.
