Kerala’s apex milk cooperative Milma has urged the government of India to free primary dairy cooperatives from income tax obligations, reports The Hindu.
It is worth mentioning that the central government wants cooperatives with more than Rs 50 lakh turnover to pay TDS for the amount exceeding ?50 lakh. A source is quoted saying milk cooperatives in Kerala do not work on the principle of profits, and their profits are used to help dairy farmers.
K.S. Mani of Milma said a million dairy farmers were attached to the milk cooperative directly, and that income tax would adversely affect cooperatives.
