The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Pla Tangka Cooperative Society (PTCS) to strengthen the financial ecosystem for Self-Help Groups (SHGs). After the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told the media that PTCS would be a game-changer for rural economic development, given SHGs’ growing contribution to Meghalaya’s GDP.
The initiative will ensure direct access to credit for SHGs, reducing their reliance on commercial and cooperative banks. Meghalaya joins Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana in adopting this model.
Inspired by Telangana’s Stree Nidhi, PTCS derives its name from Khasi and Garo words meaning “bag full of money”, symbolizing financial empowerment and entrepreneurship at the grassroots level.
