The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) has agreed to procure 1 lakh tonnes of maize from Telangana through the Telangana State Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited in the current Kharif season, media reports say.
Maize procurement centers were established on October 19 in 12 locations, including Jagtial and Nirmal districts. Maize is being cultivated on 5,46,865 acres, with an estimated production of 9,63,102 tonnes.
The Centre has set the minimum support price (MSP) for maize at Rs 2,225 per quintal, surpassing the market price of Rs 2,172. Markfed Telangana managing director V Srinivas Reddy assured that the government is prepared to handle excess production.
