The BJP government in Maharashtra has formed a high-level committee to look into the functioning of co-operative sugar mills in the state, reports Financial Express.
The step is significant in that the cooperative sugar sector in Maharashtra is dominated by the Congress and NCP. That the step has been taken just ahead of the 2019 parliamentary poll invests it with added significance.
Maharashtra cooperation minister Subhash Deshmukh says all possible ways will be found to strengthen the cooperative sugar factories in the state. The minister has directed the ‘Mukta Samiti’ to submit a report within two months.
Sources say cooperative bodies in general and sugar cooperatives in particular in Maharashtra are often portrayed as a cesspool of corruption and misappropriation of funds.
