Loan defaulters can’t contest co-op elections: Minister

S.T. Somasekhar Karnataka minister of cooperation said the State would carry out eight amendments to the Cooperative Societies Act, including disallowing people defaulting on cooperative loans from contesting elections, reports Hindu.

The minister of cooperation was talking to journalists. According to the minister, presently those who default on cooperative loans are being allowed to contest elections.

The minister claimed a large number of legislators are loan defaulters. The move is aimed to save cooperatives by disallowing defaulters from contesting Assembly and other elections.
