Hindu reports the Elappulli dairy producers cooperative society in the dry Chittoor region of Palakkad in Kerala worked hard and finally came through with flying colours in building a dairy business. The hard won achievement got them the Dr. Verghese Kurien memorial award for the best cooperative society award in northern Kerala instituted by the Calicut City Service Cooperative Bank.
The success of the Elappulli society is credited to a special breed of cows. A salient feature of the short cows, which remind one of the dwarf cows of Kasaragod, is that they can survive extreme drought even though their milk production is comparatively low.
Apart from milk, cow’s urine is a major source of income for the society. Many ayurvedic product manufacturers are purchasing it from the society at Rs.25 a litre.
