Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has returned two bills related to cooperative societies, seeking clarification from the state government.
The bills—the Karnataka Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Karnataka Souharda Sahakari (Amendment) Bill, 2024—propose changes in member nominations and the dissolution of the Cooperative Election Authority.
The Governor objected to granting voting rights to nominated members, warning it could undermine elected representatives. He also criticized the move to abolish the election authority, arguing financial concerns shouldn’t compromise fair elections.
The disagreement highlights a growing rift between the state government and Raj Bhavan over cooperative sector reforms.
