Local police say they have booked nine people, including the director of Thanjavur District Cooperative Bank, on charges of attempting to attack police officials when they tried to stop illegal sand mining being carried out on the Pamani riverbed, reports Times of India.
The director of the Cooperative Bank and his relatives have been booked under various sections.
Acting on a tip off Muthupettai deputy superintendent of police Inigo Divyan and Paravakottai inspector Subramanian rushed to the spot at Cherankulam and found some people engaged in mining activities using earth movers and other machines.
When they tried to stop them a scuffle ensued in which the co-op bank director was also involved. Interrogations are on, police said.
