The federation of Gujarat state cooperative sugar factories is on the warpath against the income tax department. The latter wants them to pay the tax spanning several years.
Recently the IT dept has not only served notices to the sugar plants but also begun sealing some for not paying tax. The sugarcane farmers are exercised over it contemplating direct action.
Sugarcane farmers are planning to vent their anger against the IT dept through a series of protest meetings across the state.
According to Mansingh Patel chairman of the federation, the IT move is unjust and would ruin the finances of the sugar factories run on cooperative basis. Gujarat has almost a score of sugar factories producing 65 thousand tonnes of sugar a day.
